Electrical Coordination Study (ECS)

When developments (residential, commercial, industrial) are proposed within or near power line statutory right-of-way (SRW), several electrical safety hazards may emerge. These hazards have to be assessed and, if required, mitigation design must be provided to minimize the identified potential hazards. Utility providers have engineering standards that contain specific requirements for developments around the power lines.

An Electrical Coordination Study (ECS) is generally required to assess these potential hazards, propose mitigations, and demonstrate to utility provider that all safety concerns are addressed with regards to a proposed development.

Our team utilizes specialized software, such as SES-CDEGS, to perform the analysis. The software (3D model) produces highly accurate results. We can utilize a simplified analysis method (2D model) to perform the ECS, where possible. We have the necessary hardware and tools to perform the required field work, soil tests, and measurements in support of the analysis.

AC Interference Study

Kosmos Group performs detailed AC Interference Studies for existing and proposed transmission and distribution systems to evaluate the impact of powerlines on nearby pipelines and railways to ensure safe and reliable operation of all infrastructure. Steady-state and fault conditions are studied as per national and international standards, including IEEE Std 2746, IEEE Std 80, CSA C22.3 No. 6, NACE SP21424 and SP0177. Using SES-CDEGS software suite, which is the industry lead in AC interference studies, our team develops accurate electrical models to assess safety factors as well as system integrity aspects. For pipeline systems, induced voltage, coating holiday leakage current density, coating stress, touch potential hazards, and interference with corrosion protection systems is assessed and required mitigations are identified. For railway systems, step and touch potential hazards, interference with signalling systems, and impacts on insulated rail joints are examined and required mitigations are determined. We also evaluate existing grounding systems and identify where grounding enhancement, or mitigation measures may be required to improve safety and operational reliability. In support of these studies, our team has the field investigation capabilities and equipment necessary to perform soil resistivity testing, grounding resistance measurements, continuity tests, step and touch voltage verifications, and other related site investigations.

AC interference can occur when transmission or distribution facilities are located near metallic infrastructure such as pipelines, railways, communication systems, or other metallic assets. Electromagnetic coupling under normal or fault conditions may result in hazardous induced voltages and currents that can create safety concerns for personnel, impact pipeline integrity and cathodic protection systems, and affect the operation of nearby infrastructure. As a result, utilities, pipeline/railway operators, and governing standards often require AC Interference Studies to assess potential impacts and determine appropriate mitigation measures.
